Romania – Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is a global celebration of women and it is marked on the 8th of March. It’s a sign of respect, appreciation and love towards women.
Women’s Day is an opportunity of joy for all the women in the world. The divinity has bestowed women upon men in order to go on with the human existence. The Romanians borrowed that pompous celebration and made it one of the most important days for a Romanian woman. It’s a sort of mixture between Mother’s Day and St Valentine’s Day.
The International Committee of Mother’s Day dates back from 1912 when the fight for women rights was beginning. It’s the time women asked for their rights and liberties, the women’s desires had an echo and the time women started to gain their independence.
Step by step, the woman has become more powerful so that her role has started being acknowledged even among the most exacting men. Thanks to their ambition and perseverance, women are no longer satisfied with being only housewives but they try to get ahead of men when it comes to salaries, jobs or social position.
It is customary for men to give flowers and small gifts to their mothers, wives, girlfriends, daughters, grandmothers and colleagues. Even little children give presents to their mothers and grandmothers.
On the 8th of March, women receive a lot of attention from men that feel obliged to recognize their progress and importance, becoming part of their well deserved success. Women have used to be pleased with getting a wish for good health (“La Multi Ani!”) but other times have led to getting special surprises, congratulations, love letters, very expensive gifts and jewelry. So, on the 8th of March, if you are a woman, it’s normal for you to be spoiled by all the men in your life: husbands, brothers, brothers-in-law, father, cousins and friends.
It’s the day when women take the liberty of acting resolutely, saying, and doing whatever they want without being judged about it. Women have the rights to be beautiful, to relax and to forget about any worries.
So this day is just a reason for us to remember all the dear women of our lives and to make them feel special because as a great French thinker has said “women are the most beautiful half of the world”.
